Steve Young

Steve Young began working for the Southern Pacific Transportation Company in 1970 as a track laborer. After working as Clerk, Train Dispatcher, Chief Dispatcher and Fireman, he was promoted to locomotive engineer in 1976, elected Local Chairman in 1977 and General Chairman of the Southern Pacific Eastern Lines in 1980, becoming the youngest full-time General Chairman ever elected. As General Chairman, Steve negotiated numerous labor agreements and handled thousands of member grievances, including hundreds of cases presented before arbitrators of the National Mediation Board. Steve was elected an Alternate Vice President of the International Union in 1987, becoming the first international officer of the union who had not been a member of the predecessor organizations.

While serving as a Union officer, Steve realized his niche in life was representing the working people against large corporations. Thus, in September, 1988, he resigned as General Chairman and returned to school, completing two years of undergraduate work at the University of Houston, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1990. He then went on to South Texas College of Law, graduating in May 1993 in the top quarter of his class. While in law school, Steve was honored as a Landell Scholar.

Since becoming a lawyer, Steve has dedicated himself to protecting the rights of all crafts of railroad workers and their families. He has represented injured workers and given numerous seminars to educate rail workers about their rights under the laws of Texas and the United States.

Today he is a FELA specialist who only handles railroad cases. Steve has handled thousands of FELA cases, of which many were tried to verdict. He is licensed to practice in all State and Federal Courts in Texas, as well as the Fifth Circuit.

Steve serves as a designated FELA legal counsel for two of the nation's largest railroad unions, the BLET and the UTU.

Steve has written several articles regarding the Railway Labor Act, the investigation process and the Federal Employers' Liability Act. In addition, he is a frequent speaker at union local and regional meetings on the subject of railroad personal injuries and investigations.
