

The author is a second generation railroader who began his railroad career in 1970 in the track department for Southern Pacific Transportation Company. He later worked for the SP as a clerk, train order operator, dispatcher, chief dispatcher, brakeman and fireman. He was promoted to the position of locomotive engineer in 1976.
